Cabinet Approves Modernization of 126 School Hostels

Colombo, June 17 – The Sri Lankan Government has approved a major project to modernize 126 school hostel buildings across the country after it was found that many of these facilities are in a deteriorated condition and have not received adequate maintenance.
According to authorities, the poor state of the hostels has adversely affected students’ educational activities, living conditions, and overall well-being. The initiative aims to provide students with a safer, healthier, and more conducive learning environment.
Under the proposed programme, the Government will invest Rs. 1.008 billion to upgrade and modernize the hostel facilities between 2026 and 2028.
The proposal was submitted to the Cabinet by Prime Minister and Minister of Education, Higher Education and Vocational Education, Harini Amarasuriya, and has now received Cabinet approval.
The modernization project is expected to focus on improving essential infrastructure, including accommodation facilities, sanitation, water supply, safety measures, and other basic amenities required for students residing in school hostels.
Officials believe that the programme will significantly enhance the quality of life for students, particularly those who depend on hostel accommodation to pursue their education, while also creating a more supportive and healthy environment for learning.
The project is scheduled to be implemented nationwide over the next three years as part of the Government’s broader efforts to strengthen educational infrastructure and improve student welfare.
