Selfless Matthews drops forbidden Bombshell

Colts Cricket Club crowned a remarkable season by securing the Premier League First-Class inter-club title, marking a significant achievement in their 150th year. The triumph came despite numerous unseen challenges, as the team quietly overcame adversity to emerge as champions.

Throughout the 2025–2026 domestic season, Colts players were tested beyond the field. While many supporters remained unaware of the difficulties faced, the team displayed resilience and unity to outperform more favored opponents and claim the top prize in Sri Lanka’s domestic cricket structure.

Former Sri Lanka captain Angelo Mathews, who played a key role in the campaign, acknowledged the team’s journey. Speaking at a felicitation ceremony, he stated that the victory was achieved “against all odds,” highlighting that challenges extended beyond on-field competition.

Colts relied on experience and determination rather than star power. Alongside Mathews, Dinesh Chandimal delivered a defining performance in the final against Nondescripts Cricket Club at Pallekele. Chasing a formidable first-innings total of 431, Chandimal produced a crucial 144, anchoring the innings under pressure.

He was strongly supported by Sanoj Dharshika, who remained unbeaten on 100, guiding Colts past the target despite losing eight wickets. The partnership proved decisive in securing the championship.

The team’s success was built on collective effort. Muditha Lakshan impressed as the leading all-rounder, while Akila Dananjaya claimed 53 wickets to finish as the tournament’s top bowler. Captain Dhananjaya Lakshan, along with several emerging players, contributed consistently throughout the season.

Head coach Anil Rideegammanagedera credited the team’s disciplined approach, noting that Colts focused on one match at a time while maintaining composure under pressure. With this achievement, Colts Cricket Club has re-established itself as a dominant force in Sri Lanka’s domestic cricket, setting a strong benchmark for future competitions.
