Focus on Introducing Cable Car Facility to Sri Pada

Attention has been drawn to initiating cable car projects at several key tourist destinations, including Sri Pada, during a tourism task force meeting held today (28) at the Presidential Secretariat under the leadership of Vijitha Herath, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Employment, and Tourism.

It was noted that there have been long-standing requests from various groups to introduce a cable car system centered around Sri Pada. In addition, locations such as Kikilimana and Ella have also been identified as suitable for similar projects.

Discussions focused on conducting feasibility studies, obtaining initial approvals, and preparing the necessary reports to implement these projects.

The meeting also discussed implementing a free visa facility for tourists from 40 countries starting May 25, with expectations that this move will boost tourist arrivals.

Further attention was given to improving sanitary facilities in 19 wildlife sanctuaries, including Yala National Park. Authorities stated that maintenance of existing facilities, including restrooms, has been handed over to a private company, and plans are underway to construct new sanitation facilities. Although this may seem minor, it was emphasized as a critical factor in enhancing tourist infrastructure.

Additionally, discussions were held on developing a tourist zone along the coastal road from Kollupitiya, aiming to attract approximately 2,000 to 3,000 tourists through the proposed project.
