World Earth Day Observed Today

Today (22) marks the observance of Earth Day, celebrated worldwide under the theme “Our Power – Our Planet.”

Amid growing environmental challenges in 2026, issues such as climate change, biodiversity loss, ecosystem degradation, industrial pollution, and deforestation continue to intensify, highlighting the urgent need for global action.

Earth Day was first observed on April 22, 1970, in the United States, initiated by U.S. Senator and environmentalist Gaylord Nelson. Over time, the movement expanded globally and is now marked in over 190 countries, with participation from more than one billion people.

In 2009, the United Nations General Assembly officially recognized the day, emphasizing the importance of protecting Earth as a system that sustains all forms of life.

The origins of Earth Day are linked to rising public concern over environmental damage, particularly air and water pollution caused by excessive resource consumption, which posed serious threats to human health.
