Police reject Gammanpila’s claims over Suresh Sallay’s treatment in CID custody

The Sri Lanka Police have rejected recent public statements made by former Member of Parliament Udaya Gammanpila regarding former State Intelligence Service (SIS) Director, retired Major General Suresh Sallay.
Former MP Gammanpila had claimed that Suresh Sallay has begun a hunger strike while in police custody and alleged that he is being subjected to inhumane treatment.
Sallay is currently being held under detention orders by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) on suspicion of involvement in the Easter Sunday attacks.
However, the Police strongly denied these allegations, stating that the suspect has not been subjected to any form of assault or inhumane treatment while in custody. They emphasized that the CID is handling the former intelligence chief in accordance with standard legal procedures applicable to any suspect, and that he has neither been granted special privileges nor subjected to discrimination or neglect.
The Police further noted that the matter is already before court proceedings and therefore requires strict restraint in public commentary. They cautioned that the release of unverified or sensationalized statements regarding an active judicial case is inappropriate and may be misleading.
