SpaceX Starship Explodes After Test Flight Over Indian Ocean

The most powerful SpaceX Starship ever launched exploded in the Indian Ocean following a mostly successful test flight.
Despite a few technical issues during the mission, SpaceX employees celebrated the outcome during a live broadcast, as the company owned by Elon Musk continues preparations for a potentially record-breaking initial public offering.
The spacecraft was an upgraded version of the SpaceX Starship, which NASA plans to use for future astronaut missions to the Moon.
The Starship launched from southern Texas carrying 20 mock Starlink satellites, which were released midway through the hour-long mission that traveled halfway around the world.
However, the spacecraft experienced engine trouble before reaching its planned destination in the Indian Ocean and burst into flames upon impact.
According to SpaceX, the fiery ending had been anticipated as part of the mission profile.
The spacecraft reportedly traveled through space successfully, but one engine malfunction prevented it from reaching the exact intended orbit.
SpaceX spokesperson Dan Huot stated that the orbital insertion was not fully nominal but remained within previously analyzed safety parameters.
After the Super Heavy booster separated successfully from the upper stage, the booster failed to complete its planned “boost-back burn” maneuver and fell uncontrollably into the Gulf of Mexico.
Although SpaceX had no plans to recover the booster, the company had hoped for a more precise landing.
Following the mission, Elon Musk described the launch and landing as “epic” and praised the SpaceX team through X, saying, “You scored a goal for humanity.”
