Suresh Sallay Should Be Protected and Treated Humanely, Says Sugeeswara Bandara

Sugeeswara Bandara, former Private Secretary to former President Gotabaya Rajapaksa, has called for the protection and humane treatment of former intelligence chief Suresh Sallay, claiming that his life is at risk.

Speaking at a media briefing in Colombo, Bandara stated that Sallay had undertaken a hunger strike in protest against what he described as unfair treatment and violations of his rights. He alleged that basic facilities had not been adequately provided and claimed that Sallay was being held under extremely restrictive conditions.

According to Bandara, between 20 and 25 security personnel are stationed around the area where Sallay is being held, while seven CCTV cameras have reportedly been installed inside the small room assigned to him. He argued that these conditions have caused significant mental stress and pressure.

Bandara further claimed that Sallay’s name had not been implicated in any Presidential Commission reports or international investigations and alleged that the current government was detaining him for political reasons. He accused the authorities of using the case to divert attention from broader political challenges.

Calling for humane treatment, Bandara urged authorities to provide Sallay with suitable accommodation, access to medical treatment and medication, healthy food, and opportunities to communicate with his family members. He emphasized that Sallay should be treated with dignity and respect.

Bandara also highlighted Sallay’s past role in Sri Lanka’s security and intelligence operations, describing him as an individual who contributed significantly to national security efforts. He warned that any harm caused to Sallay would be the responsibility of the government led by President Anura Kumara Dissanayake and Prime Minister Harini Amarasuriya.

The statements made by Bandara represent his allegations and opinions. The claims have not been independently verified, and responses from the relevant authorities were not included in the remarks.
