Chemmani Mass Grave Excavation Phase Three Begins Today

The third phase of excavation at the Chemmani mass grave site officially commenced today (27), marking a significant step in the ongoing investigation.
During the first and second phases, a total of 240 human skeletal remains were identified, of which 239 were successfully exhumed. Authorities believe that additional remains may still be present at the site, prompting the continuation of excavation work.
Approval for the third phase was granted by the Jaffna Magistrate’s Court following a request by the Judicial Medical Officer, who indicated that approximately eight weeks would be required to complete this phase.
The commencement of the third phase had been delayed due to adverse weather conditions and the monsoon season, which caused the site to become waterlogged. The second phase of excavation concluded on September 6, 2025, and the third phase has now begun after a delay of nearly eight months.
The continuation of excavation at the Chemmani site is considered crucial in uncovering further evidence and advancing investigations related to past human rights concerns. Authorities expect that this phase will provide additional findings that could support ongoing inquiries.
