Prime Minister Highlights Equal Educational Opportunities for All Children

Kurunegala, Sri Lanka – Prime Minister and Minister of Education, Higher Education and Vocational Education, Dr. Harini Amarasuriya, stated that the Government’s objective is to create opportunities for all children, without discrimination, to access the possibilities of the modern world and confidently pursue their dreams.
She made these remarks while addressing the 2025 Annual Prize-Giving Ceremony of St. Bernadette’s Model Maha Vidyalaya during an educational inspection visit to the Kurunegala District.
During the event, the Prime Minister presented awards to students who excelled in academic and co-curricular activities in 2025. She also officially launched the school’s annual magazine, “Adarsha Prabha.”
Addressing the gathering, Dr. Amarasuriya said that visits to schools and interactions with students and teachers strengthen the Government’s determination to elevate the country’s education system to a higher standard.
“We want to see schools where children are happy, safe, and surrounded by a caring environment,” she said.
The Prime Minister acknowledged that Sri Lanka continues to face several challenges, including economic difficulties and the effects of global climate change. She emphasized that overcoming these challenges requires collective responsibility and cooperation from all sectors of society.
She further noted that the Government is implementing a wide range of initiatives aimed at transforming the education sector. These efforts include curriculum development, human resource enhancement, infrastructure improvements, and equipping students with the skills needed for the modern world.
“Our goal is to ensure that every child understands that the opportunities of the future are open to them and that they have the confidence to pursue their ambitions,” she said.
Dr. Amarasuriya also revealed plans to introduce new subjects and expand digitalization in education to make learning more effective and relevant to future demands. Strengthening teacher training programmes was identified as another key priority to improve educational opportunities for students across the country.
As part of her visit, the Prime Minister also inspected St. Bernadette’s Model Primary School and later visited Gajanegama Maha Vidyalaya in Ridibendiella, Mahawa. There, she held discussions with teachers and expressed her appreciation for educators who continue to serve students with dedication despite various challenges.
The Prime Minister reaffirmed the Government’s commitment to introducing meaningful reforms that will strengthen Sri Lanka’s education system and better prepare future generations for a rapidly changing world.
