Annual Festival of Nainativu Nagapooshani Amman Temple Begins Tomorrow

The annual grand festival of the historic Nagapooshani Amman Temple will commence tomorrow (15 June) with the traditional flag-hoisting ceremony.

Following the flag hoisting, a series of religious ceremonies and festival events will be held throughout the festival period.

The highlight of the festival, the Chariot Festival (Ther Festival), is scheduled to take place on 28 June 2026, while the Theertham (Holy Water) Festival will be held on the morning of 29 June 2026. The annual festival will conclude with the flag-lowering ceremony on the same evening.

To ensure the safety and security of devotees, police officers will be deployed throughout the festival period. In addition, volunteers from the scouting movement and St. John Ambulance Sri Lanka will assist with public services and emergency support.

Transportation arrangements have also been made for pilgrims. A total of 42 boats will operate during the festival, while special bus services provided by the Sri Lanka Transport Board and private bus operators will be available.

Several essential facilities have been organized for devotees, including:

  • Drinking water supplies
  • Medical services
  • Sanitation and health facilities
  • Electricity services
  • Ambulance and emergency response services

Thousands of devotees from Northern, Eastern, and other parts of Sri Lanka are expected to participate in the annual religious celebrations.
