Northern Province Must Regain Its Leading Position in Education – Attorney Selva Skandan

Attorney I. Selva Skandan stated that the Northern Province, which once placed great importance on education, should once again regain that position and continue to remain at the forefront of academic achievement.
He made these remarks during the prize-giving ceremony for the “Mahajanan” quiz competition conducted at provincial level in 2025 and the felicitation ceremony for students who achieved national-level success in the 2025 Advanced Level Examination. The event was held on Sunday (24) at Tellippalai Mahajana College under his sponsorship, in memory of his late mother Sowbhagiyavathi Rajadnam and his wife Padmabashini Selva Skandan.
Speaking further, he emphasized that students must progress through education and that meaningful contributions are necessary for the advancement of the nation.
He noted that his mother’s dedication to education inspired him to engage in similar educational and social service efforts, which he has continued for the past ten years.
Recalling a promise made at last year’s event, he said that Tamil students who secured positions within the top five nationally would be honored. As two students achieved that distinction this year, he awarded each of them Rs. 200,000.
He also stressed the importance of learning English, stating that strong language skills can help students achieve greater success and gain wider recognition.
Selva Skandan further stated that students from the Northern Province once secured a significant number of placements in Sri Lankan universities, and claimed that the standardization policy was introduced to reduce that dominance.
Although many challenges emerged during that period, he said the Northern Province should continue striving to achieve excellence and regain its leading status in education in the future.
