FAO Issues Red Alert Over Possible Global Food Price Crisis if Strait of Hormuz Closes

The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) has warned that the closure of the Strait of Hormuz could severely disrupt the global agri-food system and trigger a major worldwide food price crisis within the next 6 to 12 months.

According to the FAO, time is rapidly running out to take preventive measures to avoid such a disastrous situation.

The Strait of Hormuz is considered one of the world’s most important maritime routes for global energy transportation and international trade supply chains.

As a result of any prolonged closure or disruption, prices of essential food items in global markets are expected to rise sharply in the coming months, potentially reaching levels unaffordable for ordinary people.

The FAO further stressed that world powers and international organizations must immediately intervene and implement precautionary measures to prevent a severe economic and social crisis from unfolding globally.
