Sri Lanka Launches Modern Freshwater Prawn Farming Project with Rs. 25 Million Allocation

National Aquaculture Development Authority of Sri Lanka Chairman Kithsiri Dharmapriya has announced that a special project has been launched to modernize the country’s freshwater prawn farming industry and transform it into a high-yield commercial sector using advanced technology.

The initiative is being implemented under a Rs. 25 million allocation provided through the 2025 Budget by Anura Kumara Dissanayake.

Introduction of New Farming Technology

Under the traditional method, prawn larvae were directly released into water reservoirs for cultivation.

However, the newly introduced technology follows a different process:

  • Post larvae are first raised inside specially designed cages installed within reservoirs
  • They are grown for approximately one month in a controlled “pre-growing” stage
  • Only afterward are they released into the main water bodies

Officials say this method is expected to improve survival rates, increase harvest yields, and enhance the overall productivity of freshwater prawn farming.

Research-Based Cage Installation Program

As part of the pilot phase of the project, authorities have taken steps to install 25 research-level cages in major reservoirs used for freshwater prawn cultivation across Sri Lanka.

The project is expected to:

  • Promote sustainable aquaculture practices
  • Increase income opportunities for farmers
  • Strengthen the fisheries and aquaculture sector
  • Support rural economic development through modern agricultural technology 📈
