Kopay Police Station Opened at New Location

14 June 2026

The Sri Lanka Police officially opened the new Kopay Police Station building on Sunday (14 June).

The new police station was inaugurated by K. M. Ananda Wijepala.

Among those attending the ceremony were Priyantha Weerasooriya, N. Vethanayahan, Members of Parliament K. Ilankumaran, S. Bhavanandarasa, and Rajeevan Jeyachandramoorthy, as well as Jaffna District Secretary M. Pratheeban and senior police officials.

The Kopay Police Station had been operating since 1995 on privately owned lands and houses located along Rasapathai Road.

In 2019, seven property owners filed a case in the Jaffna District Court, requesting that the police vacate their lands and buildings.

After more than six years of legal proceedings, the court ruled on 27 June 2025 that the police must return the properties to their owners and relocate.

Following the ruling, police officers began vacating their accommodation facilities, training grounds, and other occupied properties in October 2025.

A new police station was subsequently constructed approximately two kilometers away from the former site on Rasapathai Road.

With the opening of the new facility, the police have now completely vacated all privately owned lands and buildings that had previously been used by the station, returning them to their rightful owners.
