Convicted Accused in Vidya Murder Case Dies by Suicide in Jaffna Prison

One of the convicts sentenced to death in the murder case of Pungudutivu student Vidya was found dead after reportedly hanging himself inside the Jaffna Prison on Monday (20).

According to reports, the accused had previously been sentenced to death by the Jaffna High Court. The convicts later filed an appeal in a Colombo court requesting a reconsideration of the judgment.

However, the Colombo court also upheld the original death sentence.

Following this, the accused were required to be produced before the Jaffna High Court today for the formal reading of the judgment confirmation.

Accordingly, they had been transferred to the Jaffna Prison yesterday. In this situation, one of the prisoners was reported to have died by suicide during the early hours of today.

Police have launched investigations into the incident.
