Northern Governor Calls for Increase in Merit-Based University Admissions

N . Vethanayagan, Governor of the Northern Province, has emphasized the need to focus on increasing the number of students entering universities based on merit.

He stated that while the Northern Province currently holds the top position nationally in terms of university admission percentage among all candidates, efforts must be made not only to maintain this achievement but also to further improve it.

The Governor made these remarks during the monthly progress review meeting of the Provincial Ministry of Education, Cultural Affairs, Sports, and Youth Affairs, held under his leadership.

During the meeting, the progress of various projects implemented by departments under the ministry, including education, sports, and cultural affairs, was extensively reviewed. The current status of programs carried out in national schools within the province through the central Ministry of Education was also discussed.

The Governor highlighted several key issues and issued directives to officials. Special attention was given to a newly proposed teacher transfer policy aimed at streamlining staff distribution across the province. He instructed authorities to engage with teacher trade unions promptly and to take steps to implement the new transfer policy for the upcoming year.

He further stressed that personal records of teachers and principals should be regularly updated without delay until their retirement applications are submitted. He also directed that no pension payments should be delayed due to pending investigations and called for such inquiries to be completed without unnecessary delay.

It was also noted that delays in completing subject syllabi for senior-level students have become a significant concern. The Governor expressed confidence that academic performance could be improved by ensuring timely syllabus completion and by calculating and releasing students’ Z-scores along with final term examination results.

He instructed education officials to take continuous and immediate action to address these issues and enhance overall academic outcomes in the Northern Province.
