Kalmunai Court Remands Suspect for 14 Days in Abduction and Assault Case
The Kalmunai Magistrate’s Court has ordered a 14-day remand for a 25-year-old suspect arrested in connection with the abduction and sexual assault of a 16-year-old girl in the Kalmunai area.
The incident reportedly took place on Wednesday (03) night within the Kalmunai Headquarters Police Division.
A complaint regarding the incident was lodged with police on Thursday (04) by the victim’s family.
Following the complaint, officers from the Kalmunai Headquarters Police, including the Child and Women’s Bureau, conducted investigations and arrested the main suspect.
The suspect was produced before the Kalmunai Magistrate on Friday (05), where the court ordered him to be remanded for 14 days.
According to preliminary police investigations, the victim had visited a clothing store in Kalmunai with her mother a few months earlier. It is alleged that she later became acquainted with the suspect, who worked at the store, and the two exchanged contact details and continued communication through social media.
On the day of the incident, the suspect allegedly arrived at the victim’s residence in a hired van along with another individual.
Police stated that the victim was called outside under the pretext of asking for directions, after which she was forcibly abducted.
She was later taken to another location in the Ampara District and subsequently abandoned in the Akkaraipattu area.
The victim later reached the Kalmunai Police Station with assistance and lodged a complaint.
Police have seized the van used in the incident, while investigations are ongoing to arrest a second suspect who remains at large.
The victim has been admitted to hospital for medical treatment, and her mother is also receiving care due to emotional distress.
