Treasury Secretary to Appear Before Finance Committee Over Suspected Cyber Incident

Treasury Secretary Harshana Suriyapperuma is scheduled to appear before the Committee on Public Finance today (30) at 1:00 PM in connection with investigations into a controversial foreign debt payment.

A sum of USD 2.5 million, which was to be disbursed by the Treasury as part of a foreign loan payment, is reported to have been diverted to a third party under suspicious circumstances instead of reaching the intended recipient. Authorities suspect that this could be the result of a major cyber attack.

The Treasury Secretary had earlier informed the committee via an official letter that he would be unable to attend today’s session. However, given the seriousness of the matter, he is now expected to appear before the committee this afternoon.

The issue has raised significant concerns regarding the country’s financial management and cyber security. Detailed inquiries are expected during today’s session, with key information likely to emerge regarding how the funds were redirected and where security lapses may have occurred.
