Shooting Incident Reported Inside Galle Prison During Escape Attempt

A shooting incident has been reported inside the Galle Prison this afternoon (3).

According to the Police Media Division, prison officers opened fire after two inmates attempted to escape from the facility.

The suspects were remanded on drug-related charges and were in custody at the time of the incident.

During the escape attempt, prison officers discharged firearms, resulting in injury to one inmate. The injured prisoner sustained wounds to the shoulder area.

The injured individual has been admitted to the Karapitiya Teaching Hospital in Galle for treatment.

Authorities have launched further investigations into the incident.
