Injured Fisherman Brought Ashore for Urgent Medical Treatment

A fisherman who was injured while on a multi-day fishing vessel in deep seas off Sri Lanka’s eastern coast was safely brought ashore for urgent medical treatment through a coordinated rescue operation.

The operation was carried out under the coordination of the Colombo Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre, with assistance from the Sri Lanka Navy.

The multi-day fishing vessel named Lakshitha 5, carrying six fishermen, had departed from the Kudawella Fisheries Harbour and was engaged in deep-sea fishing approximately 75 nautical miles east of Sri Lanka when one of the crew members sustained a serious cut injury.

Following the incident, the Department of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Sri Lanka informed the Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre in Colombo and requested urgent assistance from the Navy to bring the injured fisherman ashore.

Responding swiftly, the Navy deployed a vessel from the Eastern Naval Command to the location. Naval personnel provided initial first aid to the injured fisherman before transporting him safely to the Trincomalee Harbour.

He was then admitted to the Trincomalee General Hospital for further medical treatment.

The Navy Media Unit further stated that, through the coordination of the Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre in Colombo, the Sri Lanka Navy remains on standby to provide assistance to maritime and fishing communities in distress within the country’s search and rescue region.
