Italy–Sri Lanka Relations Mark 75 Years with Colombo Embassy Milestone

The opening of the Italian Embassy in Colombo stands as a key milestone in the long-standing relationship between Italy and Sri Lanka. Marking 75 years since its establishment, the occasion highlights the steady growth of diplomatic, cultural, and economic ties between the two nations—despite geographical distance.
Over the decades, the embassy has evolved from a formal diplomatic presence into an active bridge connecting the people, institutions, and economies of both countries. This anniversary provides an opportunity to reflect on how these ties have developed and strengthened over time
The Foundation of Diplomatic Relations
The establishment of the Italian Embassy in Colombo came during a period when Sri Lanka, following independence, was building its global partnerships. Italy’s presence in Colombo played an important role in strengthening cooperation and dialogue in the South Asian region.
Several diplomats contributed to building this relationship. Among them, Italo Di Muccio, who began his tenure on March 1, 1995, and Maurizio Teucci, who served from October 21, 1997, played key roles in strengthening bilateral engagement. Their work went beyond formal diplomacy, helping to establish economic, cultural, and humanitarian cooperation.
Today, the embassy is led by Ambassador Damiano Francovigh, born in Udine on November 29, 1966, and a graduate of the University of Venice. His leadership reflects both continuity and a modern approach to strengthening ties between the two countries.
Growing Economic and Cultural Cooperation
Italy and Sri Lanka now share a strong and expanding partnership across multiple sectors. In 2022, bilateral trade reached €826 million, the highest level recorded in the past seven years. Italy has become the fifth-largest buyer of Sri Lankan exports, while also serving as an important supplier to the country.
This economic relationship supports industries such as textiles, manufacturing, and services, contributing to employment and development in both nations.
Beyond trade, cooperation has also been evident in times of need. Following the 2004 tsunami, Italy provided significant humanitarian assistance to Sri Lanka, demonstrating the strength of the relationship.
In a recent development, both countries held their first-ever Political Consultations on September 4, 2025. During these discussions, officials reviewed ongoing cooperation and explored opportunities in areas such as tourism, migration, workforce development, and air connectivity. The talks also focused on strengthening ties in science, technology, and cultural exchange.
75th Anniversary Celebrations
To mark the 75th anniversary of the embassy, a unique digital opera event was organized. This initiative combined Italy’s rich cultural heritage with modern technology, allowing audiences in Sri Lanka and beyond to take part in the celebration.
The event was attended by several dignitaries, including Hon. Hiniduma Sunil Senevi, Minister of Buddha Sasana, Religious and Cultural Affairs, and Ambassador Damiano Francovigh. Both highlighted the importance of cultural exchange and the strong connection between the two countries.
Special mention was made of the Sri Lankan community in Italy, which continues to play a vital role in strengthening people-to-people ties.
