Rap artist Sangeethsan, who was arrested for allegedly editing and sharing a homeland-themed song on social media, has been released on bail by the Chavakachcheri Magistrate’s Court today (June 12).
Sangeethsan, a native of Kilinochchi, had been detained under the Prevention of Terrorism Act (PTA) following the publication of the edited song on his social media platforms.
During today’s court proceedings, the court ordered the removal of the PTA charges against him. The case has now been converted into a regular criminal matter and will proceed under ordinary legal provisions.
Widespread Support and Legal Efforts
Following his arrest, numerous protests and public campaigns were organized across Tamil-majority areas calling for his release. Several Tamil political leaders, civil society activists, and members of the public also voiced support for the young artist.
A fundamental rights petition challenging his detention was also filed before the Supreme Court.
Appreciation for Those Who Supported His Release
Supporters of Sangeethsan have expressed gratitude to all individuals and groups who contributed to the legal and humanitarian efforts that led to his release.
Special appreciation was extended to President Anura Kumara Dissanayake, Member of Parliament S. Shritharan, Fisheries Minister Ramalingam Chandrasekar, Members of Parliament from the National People’s Power representing the Northern Province, legal representatives, family members, and all others who supported the campaign.
Call for Responsible Social Media Use
The statement also reminded the public that although freedom of expression is protected under the Constitution, social media activities are closely monitored under current online safety laws.
Citizens were urged to use social media responsibly and remain aware of the legal implications of online content.
Sangeethsan’s supporters expressed hope that he will ultimately receive full legal clearance through due process and continue his artistic career without further obstacles.
