University of Jaffna to Host First International Tamil Music Research Conference

The Department of Music at the University of Jaffna is set to host its first-ever International Tamil Music Research Conference on June 12, 2026, according to Dr. Suriyakumar, Head of the Department of Music.
The announcement was made during a media briefing held today (June 10) at the Faculty of Visual and Performing Arts of the University of Jaffna.
Speaking at the event, Dr. Suriyakumar noted that the Department of Music has a rich history spanning more than 60 years and has produced graduates who have made significant contributions both in Sri Lanka and internationally.
He described the conference as a historic milestone in the department’s journey and an important platform for promoting research and academic discussions related to Tamil music.
The conference will officially commence at 9:00 a.m. on June 12 at the Kailasapathy Auditorium of the University of Jaffna. In addition to the research sessions, a series of cultural performances organized by the Faculty of Visual and Performing Arts will be held on June 13 at 4:00 p.m.
The event is being organized with financial support from the Kandiah Karthigesu Foundation and has received contributions and assistance from university lecturers, staff members, researchers, and various individuals from outside the institution.
Dr. Suriyakumar invited students, researchers, academics, artists, and members of the public with an interest in Tamil music and cultural studies to participate in the conference and benefit from the knowledge-sharing opportunities it offers.
The conference is expected to bring together scholars and practitioners from different countries, providing a valuable forum for the exchange of ideas and research findings in the field of Tamil music.
