Cabinet Approves Rehabilitation of Colombo–Katunayake Expressway Lighting System

Cabinet approval has been granted for the rehabilitation and upgrading of the road lighting system on the Colombo–Katunayake Expressway, including the Kerawalapitiya Interchange.

The project, estimated to cost Rs. 1.098 billion, will be implemented in two phases through the National Competitive Procurement process. The proposal was submitted by Minister of Transport, Highways and Urban Development, Bimal Rathnayake.

According to the Government, approximately 85% of the expressway’s lighting system is currently non-functional due to repeated incidents of vandalism and theft.

As part of the first phase, lighting improvements will be carried out at:

  • Peliyagoda Interchange
  • Kerawalapitiya Interchange
  • Seeduwa Interchange
  • Ja-Ela Interchange
  • The section from the New Kelani Bridge to the Peliyagoda Fish Market
  • The section from Seeduwa to the Bandaranaike International Airport

The project is expected to significantly improve road safety, enhance visibility for motorists, and provide a safer and more efficient travel experience along one of Sri Lanka’s busiest expressways. 🚗💡🛣️
