Bus Operators to Meet Today Over Diesel Price Hike and Fare Revision Dispute

Representatives of Sri Lanka’s private bus associations are scheduled to meet today (June 2) to discuss the next course of action following the recent increase in diesel prices and the decision not to revise bus fares accordingly.

According to Gemunu Wijeratne, Chairman of the Lanka Private Bus Owners’ Association, a final decision regarding the continuation of private bus services is expected after today’s discussions.

He stated that representatives from all major bus associations will participate in the special meeting. The primary focus will be on identifying ways to protect the private bus industry from the financial impact of rising fuel costs.

Wijeratne further noted that bus operators have not received what they consider an adequate response from the government regarding their concerns. He claimed that the government continues to adhere to its current policy position despite requests for fare adjustments.

He also stated that many private bus owners believe it is becoming increasingly difficult to continue operating under the current conditions. As a result, some operators have reportedly suggested withdrawing services if no viable solution is reached.

The meeting is expected to determine the industry’s collective position and whether any future action, including possible service disruptions, will be considered.

Key Issues Under Discussion

  • Increase in diesel prices
  • Absence of a corresponding bus fare increase
  • Financial sustainability of private bus operations
  • Possible future action by private bus operators
  • Government response to industry concerns

A final announcement from the bus associations is expected following today’s meeting.
