Over 160,000 Graduates Applied for Teacher Recruitment Competitive Examination

The Department of Examinations stated that more than 160,000 graduates had applied for the competitive examination conducted to fill Sinhala, Tamil, and English medium teacher vacancies in national and provincial schools.

The examination, aimed at recruiting graduates already employed in the public service as well as other graduates into the teaching service, was held yesterday, Sunday (24), at 1,048 examination centres across the country.

Accordingly, 66,991 applicants from the public service and 96,442 other graduates had submitted applications for the examination.

In addition, the Department of Examinations had provided special arrangements for 323 candidates with special needs to sit for the examination.

Although the Sri Lanka Department of Examinations had planned to conduct a competitive examination in 2023 to recruit graduates in the public service into the teaching sector, the process was suspended due to three fundamental rights petitions filed before the Supreme Court and an ongoing case in the Court of Appeal.

Following the conclusion of all legal proceedings, this year’s examination was conducted allowing not only graduates in the public service but also other graduates to participate, with the objective of addressing the overall teacher shortage prevailing across the country.
