Cabinet Approves Plan to Extend Kelani Valley Railway to Ratnapura

 

The Cabinet has granted approval to obtain consultancy services for preparing a feasibility study and detailed design to extend the Kelani Valley railway line from Avissawella to Ratnapura, Cabinet Spokesman Nalinda Jayatissa announced.

He made these remarks at the weekly Cabinet media briefing held at the Government Information Department.

Approval for the project was initially granted on October 21, 2025, and proposals were called under the National Competitive Bidding process, with eight bidders submitting expressions of interest.

Following the evaluation of technical proposals, four qualified firms were shortlisted and invited to submit financial proposals. After reviewing these submissions, the Consultancy Procurement Committee recommended awarding the contract to M/s Resource Development Consultants (Pvt) Ltd for Rs. 356.22 million.

Accordingly, Cabinet approval has been granted for the proposal submitted by the Minister of Transport, Highways and Urban Development to proceed with awarding the consultancy contract.
