Plans Were Allegedly Made to Secure Pillayan’s Bail Soon After Gotabaya Rajapaksa Became President

Deputy Solicitor General Dilip Peiris informed the Colombo Fort Magistrate’s Court today (20) that discussions and plans had allegedly been initiated to secure the bail release of former State Minister Sivanesathurai Chandrakanthan, also known as Pillayan, within a week after Gotabaya Rajapaksa assumed office as President.

The Deputy Solicitor General revealed these details based on statements obtained from Pillayan’s former personal secretary, Azad Maulana.

According to court submissions, officers of the Criminal Investigation Department had recorded a statement from Azad Maulana at the Sri Lankan Embassy in France, where he is currently residing.

Presenting details of the statement before the court, Deputy Solicitor General Dilip Peiris stated that Azad Maulana had clearly mentioned that immediately after Gotabaya Rajapaksa won the 2019 Presidential Election and assumed office, special discussions and arrangements were allegedly carried out to somehow secure bail for Pillayan, who was in prison at the time.

Further documents and additional details related to the statement were also submitted to the court today.
