New Housing Project Launched in Navagampura for a Needy Family

A new housing project aimed at providing permanent homes for homeless and low-income families has been launched today (18) in the Navagampura area of Colombo North under the initiative of the National Housing Development Authority’s Colombo North City Office.

The project is being implemented as part of a large-scale nationwide housing programme carried out by the National People’s Power government under the direct patronage of the President.

As part of the initiative, the foundation stone for a new house for a family belonging to Murugaiya Madasamy, who was living in a highly unsafe and dilapidated structure in Navagampura, Colombo North, was laid at an auspicious time today.

The ceremony was conducted according to Hindu religious traditions, with a “Bhumi Pooja” performed by the Chief Priest of Kotahena Vatharaja Vanniyar Temple, Rev. S. Ravichandra Gurukkal.

Speaking to the media, Senior Manager of the Colombo North City Office of the National Housing Development Authority, R. M. Subasinghe, stated that the existing house of the beneficiary was in a severely damaged condition and posed a serious risk, especially due to heavy rains experienced in recent days.

He added that, following technical inspections and instructions from the relevant minister, the project was immediately initiated.

Under the scheme, the government provides financial assistance of Rs. 1 million for constructing permanent houses for deserving families. Accordingly, a grant of Rs. 1 million was allocated to rebuild and upgrade the house of Murugaiya Madasamy.

The event was attended by Deputy Speaker Dr. Rizvi Sali, Colombo Municipal Councillor A. P. Selvam, officials from the Divisional Secretariat, development officers, religious leaders, and members of the public.

Addressing the event, Deputy Speaker Dr. Rizvi Sali described the occasion as a significant and memorable milestone in the life of the beneficiary family, expressing hope that the new house would be completed soon and provide them with a safe and peaceful living environment.

Colombo Municipal Councillor A. P. Selvam also stated that such welfare programmes will continue to uplift low-income communities and assured that the house would be fully completed and handed over within six months.

Officials from the National Housing Development Authority further expressed confidence that the construction work would be completed efficiently and handed over to the beneficiaries at the earliest opportunity.
