Sri Lanka Electricity Tariff Revision: 18% Increase for High-Usage Households Only

The Public Utilities Commission of Sri Lanka (PUCSL) has announced a key decision regarding the electricity tariff revision for the second and third quarters of 2026.
According to the announcement, only domestic consumers who use more than 180 units of electricity per month will face an 18% increase in their electricity charges. The commission clarified that this revision will not apply to households consuming less than 180 units.
The decision has been taken due to rising electricity generation costs and an estimated revenue shortfall of around Rs. 38 billion during the first two quarters of the year. The approval for the tariff increase was also based on three key factors, including government support measures.
It has also been noted that the government has agreed in writing to provide a Rs. 15 billion subsidy, which means the price increase will affect only about 5% of total electricity consumers in the country.
As a result, approximately 95% of electricity consumers will not be impacted by this tariff revision.
The revised electricity tariff will come into effect from Monday, May 11, 2026, the PUCSL further confirmed.
