Former MP Premalal Jayasekara Arrested Over Illegal Firearm

Former Ratnapura District MP Premalal Jayasekara has been arrested by police in Nuwara Eliya for allegedly possessing an unlicensed firearm.
According to police, the incident occurred while Jayasekara was in Nuwara Eliya with family members. A verbal altercation reportedly broke out between him and a group of tourists who had arrived from Avissawella.
Following a complaint, officers from the Criminal Investigation Division in Nuwara Eliya, including Inspector Ravindra Premalal, arrested the suspect on allegations that he had brandished a handgun and threatened the group.
Investigations revealed that the firearm license issued by the Ministry of Defence had expired in 2025.
The suspect is expected to be produced before the Nuwara Eliya Magistrate’s Court.
