Suspect Arrested with Container of Smuggled Goods in Kuliyapitiya

A suspect was arrested by the Kuliyapitiya Divisional Criminal Investigation Unit after a container truck carrying a large quantity of illegally imported goods was intercepted in the Horambawa area under the Narammala Police Division.

The operation was carried out on Sunday (June 14) following a tip-off received by investigators. During the raid, police seized a container truck loaded with goods allegedly imported into the country without the payment of customs duties.

The suspect, a 41-year-old resident of Horambawa, was taken into custody and handed over to the Kuliyapitiya Police Station for further legal action.

Among the items recovered from the container were 190 bottles of foreign liquor, motorcycle spare parts, 42 motorcycle chassis, 44 motorcycle engines, bicycles and bicycle components, six forklift machines, three excavators, agricultural equipment, and a large quantity of household goods.

Police stated that officers from the Special Task Force (STF) camps in Kurunegala and Puttalam were deployed to assist in the comprehensive inspection of the container vehicle.

Investigations are continuing to determine the origin of the goods, the extent of the smuggling operation, and whether additional individuals were involved in the illegal importation and transportation of the items.

Further inquiries are being conducted by the Kuliyapitiya Police.
