Mayiliddy Residents Submit Petition to Northern Governor Seeking Land Release

Jaffna, June 15

Members of the Mayiliddy Resettlement Development Committee, who staged a peaceful protest in front of the Jaffna District Secretariat demanding the release of their lands, met Northern Province Governor N. Vethanayahan on Monday (15) and officially handed over a petition outlining their demands.

In the petition, the committee highlighted that their community, displaced on June 15, 1990, has now spent 36 years living as displaced persons, with many families still unable to return to their original lands.

The petition requests that the following two key demands be brought to the attention of the President:

  1. The High Security Zone Gazette Notification No. 1810, issued on March 28, 2013, should be completely revoked.
  2. As an initial step, lands belonging to residents of the J/248, J/251, J/255, and J/246 Grama Niladhari divisions, who have been continuously engaged in peaceful campaigns for land release, should be returned to their owners.

Following the protest, representatives of the committee visited the Governor’s Secretariat and submitted the petition.

According to reports, Governor N. Vethanayahan accepted the petition and assured that it would be forwarded to the President immediately for consideration and necessary action.
