Colombo | June 12, 2026

Bengamuwe Nalaka Thera has claimed that serious suspicions have arisen regarding the actions of former Criminal Investigation Department (CID) Director Shani Abeysekara and Catholic priest Fr. Cyril Gamini.
Speaking to journalists in Colombo on matters related to the Easter Sunday attacks, the Thera expressed concerns over what he described as attempts to undermine intelligence officers who played a key role in combating terrorism in Sri Lanka.
Allegations Regarding Intelligence Officers
Nalaka Thera stated that military and police intelligence personnel who contributed significantly to national security had allegedly been subjected to pressure and harassment over the years.
He claimed that certain actions had weakened intelligence units that were instrumental in counter-terrorism operations and safeguarding the country.
Remarks on Suresh Sallay
The Thera also commented on former Director of State Intelligence Service, Major General Suresh Sallay, suggesting that efforts may have been made to obtain information from him through intimidation or undue pressure.
He emphasized that if Sallay is found guilty of any involvement in criminal activities, he should face legal consequences through the judicial process.
However, he strongly opposed any unlawful treatment, coercion, or attempts to extract statements through improper means.
Concerns About Fr. Cyril Gamini
Nalaka Thera further stated that he has closely observed the activities of Fr. Cyril Gamini over a prolonged period and has concerns regarding some of his actions and public positions.
He claimed that these concerns have contributed to growing suspicions among certain groups, although no evidence was presented during the media briefing to substantiate the allegations.
Call for Due Process
The Thera reiterated that victims of the Easter Sunday attacks deserve justice and that all investigations should proceed through lawful and transparent processes.
He stressed that any individual found responsible for wrongdoing should be held accountable under the law, while ensuring that legal procedures and fundamental rights are respected.
Ongoing Investigations
Investigations into the Easter Sunday attacks continue, with differing views and allegations emerging from various parties. Authorities have maintained that conclusions should be based on evidence gathered through official investigations and judicial proceedings.
