No Room for Activities Promoting the LTTE, but People Have the Right to Remember War Victims – Minister Ananda Wijepala

Minister of Public Security Ananda Wijepala told Parliament today (9) that there is no room for activities that promote or glorify the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE).

Addressing the House, the Minister stated that while the government cannot allow activities that encourage or support the LTTE, people have the right to remember and commemorate relatives who lost their lives during the war.

Commenting on the case of a youth from Kilinochchi who was arrested in connection with a song allegedly linked to the LTTE, Minister Wijepala said that the Inspector General of Police and the Attorney General are scheduled to discuss the matter today.

He added that a favorable decision is expected to be reached following those discussions.

The Minister’s remarks come amid ongoing public and political discussions regarding freedom of expression, remembrance activities, and the enforcement of laws related to proscribed organizations.
