Strong International Cooperation Needed for Marine Resource Protection – Minister Ramalingam Chandrasekar in Tokyo

Sri Lanka, represented by Minister of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources R. Chandrasekar, has emphasized the urgent need for strong international cooperation to protect marine resources at the Island Nations Ocean Summit held in Tokyo, Japan from June 2 to 4.

The summit brought together heads of state, fisheries ministers, and senior officials from around 35 countries, along with prominent global leaders including the Emperor of Japan, Prince Haakon of Norway, and the Japanese Prime Minister.

Speaking at the conference, Minister Chandrasekar highlighted that no single country can independently address complex maritime challenges.

He stressed the growing threats of climate change, marine pollution, overfishing, and the rapid decline of marine biodiversity, noting that these issues require coordinated global action.

The Minister further stated that solutions must go beyond commitments on paper and translate into practical support for vulnerable island nations.

He urged developed countries to assist developing island nations by providing advanced fishing technologies, satellite monitoring systems, and data-sharing networks.

He also outlined Sri Lanka’s ongoing efforts in implementing a “Blue Economy” strategy and science-based fisheries management policies.

The government, he said, is prioritizing the protection of mangroves, coral reefs, and seagrass ecosystems.

He further emphasized the importance of empowering small-scale fishermen, coastal youth, and women as key stakeholders in sustainable marine resource management.

The visit has opened new opportunities for technical and financial cooperation between Sri Lanka, Japan, and other island nations in the marine sector.
