Sri Lanka tourist arrivals surpass 1 million in 2026

Sri Lanka’s total international tourist arrivals for the year-to-date have exceeded 1 million, according to the Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority.
This marks the second consecutive year the country has achieved this milestone, following the record-breaking performance recorded in 2025. The continued growth reflects the resilience and steady recovery of Sri Lanka’s tourism sector despite global challenges.
However, a slight decline was observed during March and April due to geopolitical tensions in the Middle East and global travel uncertainties. Industry observers note that this was a temporary slowdown in global tourism trends rather than a structural decline in Sri Lanka’s appeal.
From January 1 to May 28, 2026, Sri Lanka recorded a total of 1,000,807 tourist arrivals. In the most recent period alone (up to May 28), 134,530 tourists visited the country.
India remains the leading source market for tourist arrivals, followed by the United Kingdom, Russia, China, and Germany.
As one of the country’s key foreign exchange-earning sectors, tourism continues to show strong performance. The Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority expects this positive trend to continue in the coming months, supporting overall economic stability and growth.
