Cabinet Approves ‘Surakimu Lanka’ National Programme to Strengthen Energy Security

The Cabinet has approved the implementation of a new national initiative titled “Surakimu Lanka” aimed at ensuring energy security and promoting efficient electricity usage among the public.

The government noted that Sri Lanka’s energy security has been increasingly challenged due to heavy dependence on imported fossil fuels, unpredictable drought conditions, global geopolitical instability affecting fuel supply, disruptions in fuel distribution, and fluctuations in international fuel prices.

It further highlighted that rising fuel import costs have placed additional pressure on the national economy, which has been further worsened by inefficient electricity consumption patterns among users.

The programme will be implemented under the leadership of the Presidential Secretariat of Sri Lanka, together with the Ministry of Energy Sri Lanka, the Sri Lanka Sustainable Energy Authority, and the “Clean Sri Lanka” Secretariat, in coordination with all government institutions, state corporations, statutory bodies, the private sector, and the general public.

The proposal submitted by the Energy Minister has been approved by the Cabinet, marking a coordinated national effort to improve energy efficiency and strengthen long-term energy resilience in the country.
