Ice Production Facility Inaugurated in Velanai to Support Fishing Community

The purified freshwater ice production facility of the Velanai Thuraiyur Rural Fisheries Organization was officially opened on Sunday (24) under the leadership of Fisheries Minister Ramalingam Chandrasekar.
The facility has been established with the aim of strengthening the livelihoods of the fishing community, improving occupational development, ensuring livelihood security, and boosting the maritime economy in the northern region, where fishing plays a vital role.
Maintaining the quality of fishery products is currently a major challenge in the fisheries sector. In particular, the quality of fish transported to markets and export destinations is directly linked to pricing, market confidence, and fishermen’s income.
Considering this, the facility has been set up to provide fishermen with high-quality ice produced using purified freshwater.
This will enable fishermen in Velanai and surrounding areas to obtain ice at a lower cost, helping them preserve fish for longer periods while maintaining quality.
As a result, operational costs are expected to decrease while income levels are likely to improve positively.
Speaking at the event, Minister Ramalingam Chandrasekar stated that government development efforts are not limited to announcing projects or constructing buildings, but should focus on creating essential services that bring real improvements to people’s daily lives.
The event was attended by Member of Parliament Jayachandramoorthy Rajeevan, National People’s Power local council representatives, organization officials, members, and members of the public.
