Chinese traders arrested at Katunayake Airport over cigarette smuggling attempt worth Rs. 6.06 million

Three foreign traders, identified as Chinese nationals, were arrested by Customs officials early yesterday (25) morning at Bandaranaike International Airport while attempting to illegally bring cigarettes worth approximately Rs. 6.06 million into the country.

The suspects were detained at the airport’s passenger arrival terminal after Customs officers became suspicious of their behaviour and conducted a detailed inspection of their baggage.

During the search, officials discovered 202 cartons of foreign high-grade cigarettes carefully concealed inside their luggage. A total of 40,400 cigarettes were recovered.

Customs officials estimate the total market value of the seized items at around Rs. 6.06 million.

Investigations revealed that the suspects had purchased the cigarettes in China and travelled via Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, before arriving at Bandaranaike International Airport on flight OD-297 operated by Batik Air at around 1.05 a.m.

The trio reportedly attempted to exit through the “green channel” by declaring that they had no taxable goods in their six pieces of luggage.

However, they were intercepted and arrested at the checkpoint.

The suspects are currently in Customs detention, and further investigations are ongoing.
