Attorney General’s Department Briefs Parliamentary Committee on Provincial Council Elections

A Parliamentary Select Committee tasked with examining the electoral system under which Provincial Council elections should be conducted held discussions with representatives of the Attorney General’s Department and the Election Commission.
The meeting was recently held in Parliament under the chairmanship of Vijitha Herath.
Representatives of the Attorney General’s Department presented facts regarding the legal obstacles affecting the conduct of Provincial Council elections and explained how such elections could be held by removing those barriers.
Representatives of the Election Commission of Sri Lanka stated that they are prepared to conduct Provincial Council elections at any time, subject to the legal provisions enacted by Parliament based on the committee’s recommendations.
The meeting was attended by Deputy Ministers Arun Hemachandra, Sunil Watagala, and Muneer Mulaffer, as well as Members of Parliament Mano Ganesan, Shanakiyan Rasamanickam, Dharmapriya Wijesinghe, Samanmali Gunasinghe, and Lakshman Nipuna Arachchi.
Nizam Kariapper also joined the meeting virtually via Zoom technology.
