Prime Minister Harini Amarasuriya Holds Bilateral Talks with UK Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper

Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya, who is currently on an official visit to the United Kingdom to participate in the 43rd Board of Governors Meeting of the Commonwealth of Learning (COL), held bilateral discussions on Wednesday (20) with UK Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper.

During the meeting, the Prime Minister expressed Sri Lanka’s gratitude for the continued assistance provided by the United Kingdom toward reconstruction and recovery efforts following the devastation caused by Cyclone Ditwah.

Prime Minister Amarasuriya also appreciated the United Kingdom’s contribution toward strengthening bilateral trade and export activities between Sri Lanka and the UK.

She further briefed British diplomats on Sri Lanka’s current economic progress, the government’s policy priorities, efforts to promote human rights and reconciliation, and the country’s positive economic trajectory.

The two sides also exchanged views on current global geopolitical developments, challenges in the energy sector, regional connectivity, and the importance of strengthening long-term energy security.

Attention was also focused on enhancing academic mobility frameworks while ensuring the integrity, transparency, and continuity of migration systems.

In addition, extensive discussions were held on further strengthening bilateral cooperation between Sri Lanka and the United Kingdom in areas of mutual importance.

Sri Lanka’s High Commissioner to the United Kingdom, Nimal Senadheera, along with several officials from the Sri Lankan High Commission, also joined the Prime Minister during the discussions.
