Police Accused of Violating Traffic Rules in Manipay

An incident involving alleged traffic rule violations by police officers attached to the Manipay Police Station was reported on Saturday (23).

According to reports, a cricket match between Manipay Hindu College and Chavakachcheri Hindu College was held at the Manipay Hindu College grounds yesterday.

Police officers from the Manipay Police Station were on duty at the venue during the event. However, it was observed that police vehicles had been parked near a pedestrian crossing in violation of traffic regulations.

Reports indicate that ordinary police officers had parked a three-wheeler, while traffic police officers had parked a motorcycle at the location.

Several other vehicles had already been parked there as well. It was further alleged that the officers did not take steps to remove those vehicles, but later prevented other motorists from parking in the area, leading to arguments with members of the public, while continuing to keep their own vehicles parked there.

The road concerned is reportedly narrow and often congested with traffic. Members of the public have expressed concern that police officers, who are responsible for enforcing the law, were themselves acting in violation of traffic regulations.

The public has requested the Northern Province Senior Deputy Inspector General of Police, the Jaffna District Deputy Inspector General, the Senior Superintendent of Police, the Assistant Superintendent of Police, and the Officer-in-Charge of the Manipay Police Station to conduct an investigation and take measures to prevent such incidents from occurring in the future.
