PayPal Expected to Launch Services in Sri Lanka from May 15

Sri Lanka’s national television network, Sri Lanka Rupavahini Corporation (SLRC), has reported that global online payment platform PayPal is expected to officially launch its services in Sri Lanka from May 15. However, no formal announcement has yet been made by the company or local authorities.

According to sources familiar with the matter, PayPal officials visited Sri Lanka last month and held discussions with local stakeholders regarding the introduction of the service in the country.

The reported development has attracted significant attention among freelancers, digital entrepreneurs, and online business owners in Sri Lanka, many of whom have long been requesting full PayPal access.

Although Sri Lankan users have been able to make payments through PayPal for several years, the ability to directly receive international payments into local bank accounts has remained restricted.

SLRC stated that the service is expected to commence on May 15, but officials have not yet publicly confirmed the exact timeline or provided details regarding the scope of the operations.

So far, neither PayPal, the Central Bank of Sri Lanka, nor the Sri Lankan Government has issued an official statement regarding the reported launch.
