Girl Abduction and Abuse Case: Mother Arrested, Travel Ban Imposed on Chief Monk

Police investigations are ongoing into a case involving the abduction and unlawful detention of a minor girl in the Nittambuwa area, along with alleged prior incidents of abuse.

The victim’s mother was arrested by police on Friday (8) and has been remanded following a court order. In addition, a foreign travel ban has been imposed on the Atamasthanadhipathi monk who is reportedly linked to the incident.

According to police findings, a complaint was received by the Nittambuwa Police regarding the abduction and detention of the girl on March 6. Following the complaint, a suspect was arrested and produced before the Attanagalla Magistrate’s Court. The victim was later placed under the care of the Ragama Child Protection Centre by court order.

While at the protection centre, the girl reportedly provided statements regarding earlier incidents of abuse. Following this, further investigations were launched under the supervision of the Gampaha Senior Superintendent of Police by the Nittambuwa Police Women and Children’s Unit.

Scientific examinations were also conducted at the location in Anuradhapura where the alleged abuse is said to have taken place, and the findings were submitted to court as evidence.

When the case was heard at the Anuradhapura Magistrate’s Court on Friday (8), the court ordered the National Child Protection Authority to record the victim’s testimony through video documentation.

Further investigations into the case are continuing.
