SJB Invitation Rejected by UNP for May Day

An invitation extended by the Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) to jointly celebrate this year’s May Day has been declined by the United National Party (UNP).
In response, UNP General Secretary Thalatha Athukorala issued a letter stating that the party had already decided not to engage in political activities on May 1, as it coincides with a Poya (full moon) day.
She further noted that even during the tenure of former Prime Minister Ranasinghe Premadasa, it had been emphasized that engaging in political activities on a Poya day is inappropriate.
Accordingly, the UNP has announced that it will not participate in May Day rallies organized by the SJB or any other political party.
However, the letter also mentioned that, given the public expectation for cooperation between the UNP and SJB, the UNP remains open to working together in future political activities.
