Inmate Dies at Colombo Magazine Prison: Prison Officer and Guard Arrested

An inmate has died following an incident at the Colombo Remand Prison Magazine, prompting the arrest of a prison officer and a security guard.

According to Department of Prisons Sri Lanka, a special investigation has been launched into the incident, as confirmed by its media spokesperson A.C. Kajanayake.

Accordingly, an internal inquiry is being conducted under the supervision of an Assistant Superintendent of Prisons.

The incident occurred yesterday morning at the prison, where two inmates and a prison officer sustained injuries and were admitted to hospital. One of the inmates later succumbed to injuries despite receiving treatment.

The deceased has been identified as a 38-year-old inmate who had been remanded in custody on drug-related charges.

Preliminary reports indicate that the incident took place when two inmates attempted to escape from their cells. During efforts by a prison guard to prevent the escape, a confrontation occurred, leading to the injuries.

A complaint has also been lodged with the Borella Police, who have commenced a separate investigation into the matter, according to the Police Media Spokesperson.

Further investigations are ongoing.
