52nd Commemoration of Pon. Sivakumaran

The 52nd commemoration of Pon. Sivakumaran, regarded as the first seed of the liberation struggle, is scheduled to be officially observed by the Valikamam East Pradeshiya Sabha on Friday, the 5th, at 8:00 a.m., according to an official announcement.

The commemorative event will take place at the memorial site of Sivakumaran located at Urumpirai Junction, where a ceremonial flame of remembrance will be lit. Preparations for the event are being carried out by the Valikamam East Pradeshiya Sabha.

Pon. Sivakumaran, who fully dedicated himself to opposing what is described as ethnic oppression against the Tamil people, died by consuming poison after his arrest on June 5, 1974.

He is remembered as a youth who actively participated in the Tamil Students’ League, raising concerns against the standardization policy affecting university admissions, and who opposed violence and oppression against the Tamil people, including incidents such as the International Tamil Research Conference killings.

In remembrance of his sacrifice, the Valikamam East Pradeshiya Sabha will once again formally conduct the annual commemoration in the usual manner. The public is invited to participate in the event.
