NPP to Hold May Day Events at District Level This Year

National People’s Power (NPP) has announced that all its May Day events this year will be held at the district level, instead of organizing a single large rally in Colombo.

This was stated by party senior member and Deputy Minister Rathna Gamage.

According to him, the decision was taken considering the current national situation, including energy shortages and other practical challenges, with the aim of minimizing inconvenience to the public.

Key Arrangements

  • A total of 21 May Day rallies and meetings will be held across districts nationwide
  • Party supporters and trade unions will be mobilized within their respective districts
  • Leaders of the party will travel to different districts to participate in these events

Change from Previous Years

Traditionally, the NPP has organized a large central May Day rally in Colombo. However, this year:

  • The main Colombo rally will not take place
  • Activities will be decentralized across the country

Objectives

The new approach aims to:

  • Strengthen the party’s grassroots network
  • Reduce transport and logistical costs
  • Ensure wider participation at local levels

Officials noted that this district-based model is expected to improve organizational efficiency while adapting to current economic and energy constraints in the country.
