The Police Media Division has stated that former SriLankan Airlines Chief Executive Officer Kapila Chandrasena has reportedly died by suicide.<\/p>\n
His death comes while investigations were ongoing against him over allegations that he accepted a bribe of 2 million US dollars during the purchase of Airbus aircraft for SriLankan Airlines.<\/p>\n
Kapila Chandrasena had been granted bail two days ago after being held in remand custody in connection with the case.<\/p>\n
However, it was later revealed that two individuals who appeared in court claiming to be his relatives in order to provide bail had allegedly acted as fake sureties. They were subsequently arrested.<\/p>\n
According to the bail conditions imposed on Chandrasena, three close relatives were required to sign as personal sureties.<\/p>\n
Investigations revealed that the suspects had allegedly received 15,000 rupees each to appear as relatives for the bail process.<\/p>\n
Following the discovery that the bail conditions had been violated and the court\u2019s trust had been undermined, Colombo Chief Magistrate yesterday ordered the re-arrest of Kapila Chandrasena and instructed that he be produced before court.<\/p>\n
